Side Holiday & Travel Guide
Located in the Antalya province of Turkey, the coastal town of Side is possibly the one richest in historical sites and history itself in Turkey. It is mostly a resort town that never fails to constantly attract tourists from all corners of the globe. Due to its immense history which dates all the way back to several centuries BC, makes it one of the oldest holiday destinations.
When you are in Side, you might have the feeling that you are in Greece and not Turkey. This is simply because of the fact that it was the Romans who ruled Side from way back to 333 BC when it was occupied by Alexander the Great and it was also the Romans who shaped the general look and culture of Side. It is in other words, a piece of ancient Greece lying on Turkish grounds.
Due to its Roman history, a considerable number of Roman ruins still stand strong today in Side. One of the most prominent ones is that of a Roman Amphitheater, which is possibly the most colossal structure in Side as it can be clearly viewed from a high up aerial point of view. Other notable ruins are the Temple of Apollo a typical Roman aqueduct and the Hellenistic Great Gate known as the Megale Pyle.
Today, the geography of Side combined with the historical structures that grace its surface is getting holiday seekers flocking to its shores. Towards the east and west of the old town of Side which is located on a peninsula lie beautiful sandy beaches. The western side is where most of the hotels are today while on the east are the quieter beaches etched by the sights of some ruins of Side's Roman past. Although not situated in the Caribbean or anywhere much like that, the fact that it is a beautiful resort town means everyone here lives the lifestyle of a beach frequenter and this is evident in the crowds that form on beaches especially during weekends. In terms of what remains of the great structures which stood tall during the rule of the Roman empire, archaeological research is done every now and then in Side but not too often so that it does not interrupt the tourism economy which is possibly the biggest one of Side.
Overall, Side is a harbor town that has it all. Being under the beautiful Mediterranean sun which reflects along the horizons of its beautiful beaches, it is in a group of only few resort towns which provide great stretches of sand and sea as well as historical structures of which sights are to behold. Side is Turkey at its best as it tells a story of a glorious past and the beautiful present. Side is truly a magnificent place to be in during your holidays whether it is in the summer or the winter.
